Conwy Estuary Cycle Route
ARTISTIC INTERPRETATION
An exciting new project has just started around the Conwy Estuary and Conwy Quay area. Conwy County Borough Council and Cywaith Cymru/Artworks Wales have appointed an artist-in-residence for the Conwy Estuary Strategic Route development project. The artist Claire Barber, who is from Southampton, has worked extensively within mid and North Wales. Her residency for the Conwy Estuary and Quay involves conducting research and development into possible themes and ideas for a series of commissioned artworks for the dual-use pedestrian / cycle path, which runs from Llandudno's West Shore to Conwy, with a link via the RSPB Nature Reserve to Glan Conwy. The final commissions, to be designed and created by several other artists working with Claire, are to include gateway features, way-markers, sculptural seating and mosaic artworks, and a sculptural piece for Conwy Quay.
Claire will be artist-in-residence for the next couple of months. She will be carrying out interviews, collecting histories, tales, stories, observations and information from members of the public, investigating people's use of, interest in and love for the local area. Claire is particularly interested in the traces people leave behind, and their passage from A to B. She is keen to glean memories and future expectations, and find out how people see and think of the local area today.
Claire has a base in the Library in Conwy until mid August and members of the local community and visitors to the area are invited to drop by to meet her, or leave messages for her. Claire will also be out and about along the coastlines of the Estuary and on Conwy Quay, looking for people to speak to and take part in this fantastic project, so keep an eye out for her!
The Conwy Estuary Residency has been co-ordinated and funded by Cywaith Cymru/Artworks Wales in collaboration with Conwy County Borough Council supported through European ERDF funding and with the financial assistance of the Arts Council of Wales.
